Many Green Card applicants are puzzled when seemingly similar cases take vastly different amounts of time to process. According to immigration professionals with USCIS experience, the agency has long aimed for more uniform processing times, but numerous behind-the-scenes variables make that difficult to achieve in practice. One of the most significant hidden factors is which USCIS field office or service center receives a case. Different offices operate at different speeds due to varying staffing levels and caseloads. This alone can account for major discrepancies in timelines between applicants who appear to have identical cases. Security and background checks are another key variable. While most checks clear quickly, some require additional manual review for identity matching or records verification. Importantly, a delayed security check does not indicate a problem with the case itself.
