15Q&ACan I travel internationally while my I-485 is pending?Rraj_eb3_2024TEST18 repFeb 20, 2026 · 362 viewsI have a family emergency and need to travel back home. My I-485 has been pending for 6 months. Do I need advance parole?
One thing nobody mentions — some countries require a valid visa to transit. Check your layover countries too.
If you're on H-1B and have a valid H-1B visa stamp, you can actually travel on that without AP. But you need to re-enter in H-1B status.
This thread is incredibly helpful. Saving for when I need to travel next month.
You MUST have an approved Advance Parole (I-131) before traveling. Leaving the US without it will be considered abandonment of your I-485.
After 180 days of I-485 pending, your I-140 is 'portable' under AC21. They can revoke but it won't affect your I-485.
I made the mistake of letting my AP expire while abroad. Had to get emergency AP through my congressman's office. Worst 3 weeks of my life.
Important: if you use AP to re-enter, you lose your H-1B status. You'd then be in 'parolee' status. This matters if your I-485 gets denied.
I traveled twice with my combo card (EAD/AP) and had no issues. Just make sure it's valid and not expired.
Is the combo card sufficient or do I need the standalone I-131?
Got it, thanks Anna! My combo card arrives next week.
Thanks Deepa! That puts my mind at ease about the interview.
Can my employer revoke the I-140 while I'm abroad? That's my biggest fear.
To add to Anna's point — even with AP, re-entry can sometimes be tricky. Make sure you carry all your documents.
Combo card works fine. It serves as both EAD and AP. Just make sure the AP portion is still valid.
Good point. I always carry a full copy of my I-485 receipt, EAD, AP, and I-140 approval.
My lawyer specifically told me NOT to travel until my I-485 was pending for at least 6 months. YMMV.
